Lauzon Hardwood Floor Installation Specs
Classics Collection - Solid Hardwood
Measure room carefully and determine how the flooring will be laid out, making sure that parallel sides are equal and equally distant from the walls. Allow a minimum of 3/4" (19 mm) from wall to floor for horizontal expansion, and 1/4" (6 mm) on the vertical ends. For 2 1/4" (57 mm) wide boards, snap the chalk line 3" (75 mm) from the wall. For 3 1/4" (81 mm) wide boards, snap the chalk line 4" (100 mm) from the wall.
Choose the straightest boards (not necessarily the longest) for your first row, since you will not be able to straighten them later. Lay the tongue side of the board on the chalk line.
Prepare the first row for nailing down by drilling a pilot hole 1/2" (12 mm) from the side, and then every 10" (250 mm). Stop 2" (50mm) from the end. Drill a minimum of two holes per board.

Next Step - Engineered Hardwood
NextStep flooring can be installed in the following ways:
• Glued: On, above, or below grade
• Nailed or stapled: On, above, or below grade
• Floated: On or above grade only
NOTE: The NextStep Collection is not recommended for bathroom installations.
Storage & Handling
Take care when handling and unloading cartons. Flooring should not be delivered until the building has closed in, with windows and doors in place, and until cement work, plastering and all other materials are thoroughly dry. NextStep flooring cartons should be stored:
• in a climate-controlled area
• with at least 4" (approx. 10 cm) of air space under the cartons
• on the ground floor or higher
• away from outside walls.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT OPEN CARTONS PRIOR TO INSTALLATION.
Relative Humidity
In geographic areas that experience extreme climate and humidity conditions, it is natural, due to the inherent properties of wood, for some minor expansion and contraction to occur which could result in some visual changes. These occurrences are not covered by LAUZON warranties but should self-correct with seasonal climate changes. To minimize this visual change, it is important to maintain relative humidity
between 35% and 65% and to control radiant heating systems in a way not to exceed the maximum surface temperature recommended in the LAUZON NextStep.

1. Lay out working lines. Establish the 90° working line.
• NextStep Herringbone/Tweed can be installed beginning at a point anywhere
in the room. Normal procedures typically dictate installation starting in the
center. If you wish to use metric measurements to establish the working lines described below, do not convert the imperial measurements into their metric equivalent. The metric measurements indicated in parentheses in the two examples below do not correspond exactly to the imperial measurements in feet. To ensure perfect 90° and 45° angles, the metric measurements have been adjusted for this purpose. You may rely on both the imperial measurements and the metric measurements indicated in parentheses.
Lines X and Y must be exactly 90° to form a perfect square corner. To ensure this
angle, do the following:
a) Snap a chalk line X through the center of the room.
b) Mark the center point of line X. Then make a second mark on the same line at a
distance of 3' (120 cm) from this central point.
c) From this second mark (at 3'/120 cm from the central point), scribe an arc of 5'
(200 cm) in the general area where line Y will be.
d) From the central mark on line X, scribe a second arc of 4' (160 cm), crossing the
arc in the previous step.
- A line passing through the central point of line X and the intersection of both
arcs will form a perfect 90° angle with line X. Verify all measurements
(3, 4, and 5 feet/120, 160 and 200 cm).
If correct, strike a line through the conjunction of the arcs and center point of line X from wall to wall. This mark is line Y.
2. If the NextStep herringbone pattern is to be installed at a 45° angle to the walls,
you will need to establish a 45° working line (see figure 2).
a) From the center point (intersection of lines X and Y), measure 4' (120 cm) down each side of lines X and Y, for a total of four marks.
